Nomads of Ladakh

The Changpa are a nomadic tribe living in the high altitude regions of Ladakh.

In August 2018, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure – a motorcycle trip through Ladakh. Riding on a Royal Enfield, I was excited to explore the region’s natural beauty and immerse myself in its unique culture.

One of the highlights of my trip was the opportunity to live with the Changpa for three days. These semi-nomadic people have been living in the high-altitude region for centuries, and it was fascinating to learn about their way of life and traditions. However, getting to their remote location was not easy. We had to drive for four hours off-road, navigating treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.

The Changpa are primarily dependent on their livestock, which consists of yaks, sheep, and goats. They move from one grazing area to another, depending on the season and the availability of resources. Their tents, or ‘reboos’, are made of yak wool and are highly durable, providing them with shelter during their travels.

The Changpa have a rich culture and a deep connection to their land. They have lived in these harsh environments for centuries, adapting to the extreme temperatures and high altitudes. They have a profound respect for nature and live in harmony with their surroundings.

The experience was truly unforgettable. From the breathtaking landscapes to the warm hospitality of the locals, Ladakh offered a glimpse into a world that is both fascinating and awe-inspiring.
