Varanasi: Holy City
An ancient city in India where life and death intertwine.
Varanasi is a city located on the banks of the Ganges River in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It’s considered one of the oldest cities in the world, and is regarded as a sacred city in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
In December 2017 I had the privilege of spending 10 days in Varanasi. The city’s rich heritage and vibrant culture are a testament to the thousands of years of history that have passed through its streets. From the mystical energy that permeates the atmosphere to the dazzling colors and sounds of the bustling markets, Varanasi is a city that awakens the senses and captivates the heart.
One of the most striking aspects of Varanasi is the way that life and death exist side by side. The city is famous for its ghats, which are stairs that lead down to the Ganges River, where many Hindus go to bathe in the river and perform cremations for their loved ones. It’s a powerful reminder of the cycle of life and death, and it’s something that I’ll never forget.
Another magical aspect of Varanasi is the abundance of temples, shrines, and holy men, all of which contribute to the city’s palpable spirituality. The air is filled with the sound of prayer and chanting, and it’s impossible not to feel the power of the city’s devotion.
In essence, Varanasi is a city that transcends explanation. Its beauty and spirituality are so profound that they must be felt firsthand to be fully appreciated. The city’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant traditions create a unique atmosphere that’s impossible to describe in words. If you ever get the chance to visit Varanasi, don’t hesitate to seize the opportunity.
